
James is experienced in handling patents across technical fields including telecommunications, computer software, consumer electronics, and medical imaging. He has drafted and prosecuted patent applications in the UK, Europe, and worldwide for clients ranging from SMEs to major multinational corporations. He is also highly experienced in coordinating global patent prosecution strategies for high value patent portfolios across numerous jurisdictions.
James regularly advises on standard essentiality issues and is experienced in assessing key assets for licensing and litigation, including claim charting, stress-testing validity and infringement, and shaping strategic prosecution.
James is also heavily involved in patent litigation matters, having provided litigation support in major telecommunications standards essential patent disputes, including successful proceedings before the UK High Court and the UK Court of Appeal. He is currently involved in proceedings before the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and is well placed to advise clients on the UPC and the evolving European litigation landscape.
Prior to joining EIP, James worked as a patent examiner at the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), giving him valuable insight into the examination process when drafting and prosecuting patent applications. During his time at the UKIPO, he also contributed to the passage of the IP (Unjustified Threats) Act 2017, supporting parliamentary debates and preparing guidance for businesses on the new legislation.
James holds a Master’s degree in physics from the University of Oxford, where he specialised in condensed matter physics and atmospheric physics.
