About EIP Life

EIP Life attorneys have experience of representing the entire spectrum of organisations in the life sciences sector from academic and charitable institutions to start-ups and global healthcare companies. We are experts in obtaining, enforcing and challenging patents on behalf of our clients. We regularly get involved in due diligence projects required for investment in innovative start-ups or in preparation for a product launch.

About the vacancy

Our Life Sciences practice continues to grow and is being built on cutting-edge direct client work. We are seeking a finalist or a recently qualified patent attorney to join the team. To help the right candidate flourish, we offer high quality, challenging work along with the benefits of a small team including direct access to, and attention from, a supervising Partner.

The client base for the EIP Life team, headed by Monika Rai, is in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector. Our client base is active in technical areas such as antibody and vaccine technology, gene editing, nucleic acid therapeutics involving RNAi, medicines and diagnostics. With offices nationally, as well as a notable Life Sciences presence in our recently opened Stockholm office, our clients come to us by recommendation from existing clients and contacts and due to the strength of our reputation.

We have a need to recruit a finalist or recently qualified associate patent attorney with experience in biotechnology and/or related life science topics. With a largely direct client base and a growing practice, it would be helpful if applicants have experience of client care and it is crucial that the applicant is flexible and responsive. Equally, experience of opposition and due diligence work would be useful but neither this nor client exposure are essential to succeed.

We are ideally looking to hire this position in London but welcome applications from those closer to other EIP offices.

Skills, experience & qualifications

The successful candidate would either be fully qualified or be on track to qualifying as a UK and European Patent Attorney. We would expect candidates to have passed the UK foundation exams (or QMW or Bournemouth equivalent) and to have sat, or be about to sit, some of the UK or European final exams. An academic background in life sciences is essential.

You will be comfortable working in a modern, fast-paced environment where you are given a level of autonomy to do your work.

Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate the following:

  • An appropriate professional attitude (personable, well prepared, flexible and enthusiastic)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to express complex ideas clearly and concisely, and the ability to structure a precise and coherent argument
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people at different levels
  • Ability to balance knowledge of intellectual property law against commercial requirements
  • Ability to work under pressure, which may be the result of competing and inflexible deadlines when working for more than one client at the same time
  • Excellent research and presentation skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail, and an analytical mind
  • Initiative and the ability to act independently

Other information

With our state-of-the-art paperless systems, we offer hybrid working, three days in the office and two from home.

The firm has a friendly, progressive and mutually supportive working environment along with a smart casual dress policy and stylish modern offices.
