Head of EIP Elements speaks at SCI event on chemical patents

Darren Smyth, the head of EIP Elements, will be a guest speaker at a Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) event on what a chemist needs to know about patents.

The event on 27 January is aimed at R&D staff and legal professionals, as well as PhD and Post Doc students. The seminar is intended to increase awareness among R&D organisations of the value of IP.

The programme demonstrates the whole patent process and IP considerations, from what makes inventions patentable, to drafting an application, infringement of patents, and determining the value of a patent portfolio, using case studies to illustrate examples.

Darren will talk about Patent Specifications and Chemical Claims, including how to read and interpret a patent specification, patents as a source of information, and the timing of patent filing for optimum protection and value. He will also cover the patentability of chemical inventions and how the requirements for patentability are defined.

The programme also includes IP litigations experts, solicitors, a US attorney, and in-house counsel from industry. Eli Lily will host the event, and registration to attend can be made here.
