James is a former patent examiner who joined EIP after two years working at the UK Intellectual Property Office. His technical focus included lighting, heating and cooling; gas turbines; foodstuffs and their preparation; and electronic display equipment. James also developed expert patent searching skills.
While at the UK IPO, James was invited to work on the passage of the IP (Unjustified Threats) Act, wherein he prepared briefing materials for the Minister for IP, and supported at debates in the House of Commons. He also drafted the UK IPO’s official Guidance for IP Professionals regarding the new law.
James graduated from the University of Oxford with a Master’s in Physics, specialising in condensed matter physics, and atmospheric physics. His research project was in applied superconductivity in which James built and investigated a partially superconducting transformer. This involved winding a secondary coil from a high-temperature superconducting material for coupling with an ordinary copper primary coil.
While at the UK IPO James completed the Patents module of the LL.M in IP Law (Distinction) at the University of South Wales.
